Frequently Asked Questions

The Academy Model

What makes Poiema Suzuki Academy different from traditional music lessons?
Traditional lessons often focus on a 30-minute weekly interaction between a teacher and a student. Our Academy provides a comprehensive educational framework. This includes individual instruction, group sessions, parent training, and a focus on the "Total Brain Workout"—the neurological development that occurs when a child studies a stringed instrument within a supportive community.

Why does the Academy only offer Violin and Viola?
By specializing in these two instruments, we provide a "Neurological Greenhouse" focused on the specific benefits of the Auditory-Motor Loop and the unique physical dexterity required for bowed strings. Ms. Sharon’s 34 years of mastery in teaching these specific instruments ensures your child receives the highest level of professional guidance. While our current focus is on building a world-class foundation in these two disciplines, the Academy is designed to grow. As our community of Founding Families expands, we anticipate adding additional instruments to our framework in the future, maintaining the same high standards of Suzuki pedagogy and neurological excellence.

Does my child need to participate in the Group Classes?
Yes. In our Academy, Group Classes are not an "optional extra"—they are a core component of the curriculum. While individual lessons focus on specific technical mastery and the parent-teacher partnership, Group Classes provide the social and musical "nutrient" that a child cannot get alone.
Participation in both individual and group sessions is what creates the "Total Brain Workout" and ensures your child’s progress remains steady and joyful.
The benefits of the Group Class include:

  • The Joy of Community: Students see their peers working toward the same goals, which provides immense motivation and a sense of belonging within the Academy.
  • Ensemble Skills: Learning to play with others refines the Auditory-Visual-Motor Loop in a unique way, requiring students to watch the leader and each other, and listen to the collective sound while maintaining their own technical precision.
  • Review and Reinforcement: We use this time to polish "Mother Tongue" repertoire, ensuring that old pieces stay fresh and technically sound.
  • Leadership and Character: Older or more advanced students learn the responsibility of leading, while younger students find inspiration in seeing what is possible with continued practice.

The Parent’s Role

Do I really have to be in every lesson?
Yes. In the Suzuki Triangle, the parent is the "Home Teacher." You are the bridge between the studio and your home environment. By being present, you learn exactly what and how your child needs to practice, which eliminates "practice frustration" and ensures steady progress.

I don’t have any musical background. Can I still be a "Home Teacher"?
Absolutely! In fact, most of our parents start with no musical experience. This is why our 6-Week Parent Orientation (with the Summer Parent Residency "head start" option) is mandatory. We will teach you the fundamentals of the instrument and the pedagogy so that you are fluent in the basics before your child begins.

What if I have other children? Can they come to the lesson?
Yes, siblings are welcome! We recognize that for many families, the "Suzuki Triangle" is part of a larger family ecosystem. However, to protect the "Sanctuary of Focus" required for the student’s neurological development, we ask that siblings remain a quiet, non-distracted presence. Many families find that having siblings observe quietly is actually an advantage, as it begins the "Mother Tongue" immersion process for them early. We simply ask that parents bring quiet, "unplugged" activities (such as books or coloring) to ensure the environment remains peaceful for the student currently working with the teacher.

Instruments & Logistics
Where do I buy a violin or viola?
We ask that you do not purchase or rent an instrument from outside of the Academy. The Academy maintains a fleet of hand-selected, professionally set-up instruments. To ensure the highest quality of sound and ease of play, all students rent their instruments directly from the Academy (unless they have been playing for many years and already own their instrument). This guarantees that your child has a tool that is a "masterpiece" in its own right.

What is the "Summer Parent Residency"?
The Residency is an optional "Head Start" track that meets for 6 weeks in June & July. It allows parents to complete their foundational training during the summer months. This ensures that when the official Academy year launches in September, you are already fully prepared to lead your child’s daily practice.

What are the key Enrollment & Payment dates for 2026?
  • Early Bird Enrollment: April 15, 2026
  • Regular Enrollment Deadline/Payment #1 Due: May 1, 2026
  • Summer Parent Residency (Head Start option): June/July 2026
  • Payment #2 Due: August 1, 2026
  • Official Academy Launch: September 1, 2026
  • Payment #3 Due: December 1, 2026

Can we enroll at any time?
Yes! While we have a primary academic launch each September, our doors are open for new families to begin their journey throughout the year. Because our model is built on individual development rather than a rigid classroom assembly line, we can integrate a new "Masterpiece" whenever a family is ready to commit to the process.

How mid-year enrollment works:
  • The Foundation First: Regardless of when you join, the process always begins with the Parent Interview and the mandatory 6-Week Parent Orientation.
  • Customized Integration: Once the parent has become fluent in the fundamentals, the student is seamlessly integrated into the individual lesson schedule and the appropriate Group Class.
  • Pro-Rated Tuition: For families joining outside of the September launch, tuition is handled on a pro-rated basis to align with the remainder of the Academy year.

If you feel your family is ready to step into our "Neurological Greenhouse," we invite you to take the Family Alignment Discovery Quiz today to begin the process.

The Poiema Suzuki Academy Community Covenant

What is the "Community Covenant"?
The Covenant is a shared agreement among our families to maintain a high-integrity environment. It covers our commitment to direct communication, the protection of the "Neurological Greenhouse" from digital distractions, and a focus on "Character First." CLICK HERE for the full Community Covenant.

What happens if we miss a lesson?
Because we operate on an all-inclusive tuition model for a specific cohort of families, we do not offer make-up lessons. However, we provide digital resources and practice guides through the Parent Resources portal to help you maintain momentum at home until your next scheduled session.
